How do you take out a 3 piece bottom bracket with out a bottom bracket tool?

I have a we the people bike and I want to take the bottom bracket out. People told me to use a screwdriver if I don’t have a tool but that hasn’t worked.

Everyone who’s done any sort of bike maintenance is going to tell you to just buy the tool. Obviously this is ideal, but your question is how to get it out without the tool. You "can" do it with a screwdriver, but make sure you’re giving it light taps and continue tapping the bracket peices out in multiple spots (if you keep banging on it in the same groove you’ll ruin the BB).

Otherwise, you could just go to a shop and many will loosen the bracket for you (the hardest part) and then you can do your maintenance and tighten it up with the screwdriver or go back to your LBS.

  1. Either buy the correct tool or take your bike to a shop to have them remove the BB for you.

  2. Go right ahead and use a screwdriver….Take note the first word of "SCREWdriver"……Its diy’ers who keep bike shop mechanics busy! Use the correct tool or DO NOT DO IT!

  3. Get the proper tool. Without it you’ll just damage something and then you’ll have to replace it. You don’t need to purchase a shop quality tool. The lower priced version will get the job done.
