The first day I was in Tokyo I went to an Italian restaraunt, and I LOVED it. I just had spaggetti, but it was still fantastic. Maybe it is just me, but I would totally vouch for that. Of course, I have never eaten in Italy….but I do like it better than the Italian food in the United States.

Sometimes it is true and more often it isn't. If you go to the tourist places in Rome, Italian food is better in Tokyo. Just stay away from the big cities like Roma, Napoli and Milano. Italian food is not only pizza and pasta in Italy and you would be surprised about the variety and imagination they spend on their food. The best Italian food, you can find it in Sicily and in Northern Italy.

Italian food in Japan, in my experience is not as good as Italian food in America.

Keep in mind there are many high class restaurants in Tokyo, so if you are willing to pay for very expensive Italian food at a very fancy restaurant it might be the best Italian food you’ve ever had. However, I have been to many moderately priced Italian restaurants in Japan and I can tell you that they are no better than similar restaurants in America.

Different strokes for different folks.

I know people that prefer Koreans to make sushi over an authentic Japanese restaurant.
And I know people that people that don’t.

It’s all relative to perception. What does one person like vs. another.

The worst Italian food in Italy would be worse than the best Italian food in Japan.

It doesn’t mean all Japanese Italian food are better than whole Italian foods in Italy at all.

I only experienced few Italian foods in Milan and Rome but, I think some of them were well enough good as Prego, Beverly Hills, CA. and some other much worse than any coffee shop’s too boiled spaghetti & mashed meatballs in downtown L.A.. Same thing may happen.

If you consider whole kernels of corn in your spaghetti and squid ink on your pizza to be "better Italian" then sure. Japan's idea of a "genuine American milkshake" also involves kernels of corn and corn flakes.
