What ingredient in chinese food could cause vomiting?

October 312009

Me and my husband had Chinese food last night. I believe this is the 2nd time i got sick from this recent place. But hes doing fine and not sick at all. So i’m wondering maybe its some sorta ingredient that doesn’t agree with me. Could msg cause vomiting?

Yes, MSG could cause vomiting – if you are sensitive to it, it can cause all kinds of problems with your digestive system. The fact that your husband is not sick makes it much less likely that it is food poisoning. However, if it is MSG sensitivity, all Chinese places should bother you. I would try avoiding this particular place in the future. :D

It may just be food poisoning. Or you may be allergic to certain ingredients in the dish. MSG is just such a common product in virtually any food you can think of (including chips, fast food etc..) I highly doubt it is the source unless chips and fast food make you vomit too.

    its called MSG.

MSG is a flavor enhancer which has been used effectively for nearly a century to bring out the best flavor of foods. Its principal component is an amino acid called glutamic acid or glutamate. Glutamate is found naturally in protein-containing foods such as meat, vegetables, poultry and milk. The human body also produces glutamate naturally in large amounts. The muscles, brain and other body organs contain about four pounds of glutamate, and human milk is rich in glutamate, compared to cow’s milk, for example.Glutamate is found in two forms: "bound" glutamate (linked to other amino acids forming a protein molecule) and "free" glutamate (not linked to protein). Only free glutamate is effective in enhancing the flavor of food. Foods often used for their flavoring qualities, such as tomatoes and mushrooms, have high levels of naturally occurring free glutamate.

I doubt it’s MSG. Possible, but I doubt it.

Firstly, you also have plenty of MSG in your food. Look at the small label on any processed meat or soups. Dose in a restaurant could be higher though.

But could be anything else. The oil, something wrong with the meat. Maybe you are sensitive to something else. Cinnamon, anise, starch, unusual oil.

    My MSG experience is:
    Little: nothing
    Medium: itchy skin, thirst
Large: first dry throat, then sore throat, then fever for a few days.
