chinese food?
who came up with the type of chinese food that we commonly see like sweet and sour pork, general tso’s chicken, etc? because its really really different from what real chinese food is.
Chinese Immigrants, mostly in San Franciso, New York, when they come over in the early 1900′s/mid 1900′s. Around the time that fortune cookies were invented. They westernized it and simplified it to suit the American public.
Its all been "westernized" by the western civilization over time and has evolved into chinese food here!

That is a really good question. I can only assume that someone "Americanized" the Chinese recipes and thus created Sweet and Sour dishes or others that we all know.

Chinese food as we know it has been westernized but, still has the influences of the different provences.
For instance Mongolian Beef dishes draw from the Mongols (I believe they are from up near the Russian Boarder) while other dishes draw from the Cantonese or Mandarin parts of the culture.
I was once taken to a Chinese Restaraunt by a friend who was from Shanghai and she told me this was a REALLY authentic Chinese restaraunt (the restaraunt was in Denver) and the food was Cantonese in style. In fact, you had to know Chinese to order. The food was really different, most everything was steamed and while it was good, it did not much resemble what I was used to. They also had these rolls that were sugar rolls (you can buy them in Chinese grocery stores) that were really good. She almost had them serve me Blood soup and she ate Chicken Feet.
It was different, but I was glad to have had that expierence.

Depending on the taste many cultures were mixed in the MELTING POT and some how the opposite in chinese in the turn out of GROSS and Odd animal parts in food. THATS WHY Sweet and Sour for fact is duck / chicken mix with a sweet cherry /gingo sauce
YUM OR NOM/

there are actual dishes such as s&s pork, tso’s chicken, just prepared differently. like most other cuisins come to the united states, been modified to the american taste buds.
many dishes were made popular here for unknown reasons, such as moo shu, moo goo chicken, hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, egg roll, chop sui, etc.
these dishes actually exist, just not popular and prepared differently in china.

The Chinese who originally started their restaurants back in the 19th century (mostly in mining towns) decided to westernize their menus to appeal to a broader market. It worked.

It’s mostly based on Cantonese food, because they tend to eat lots of sugar in their savory dishes. In the north, we eat tons of salt and we never put sugar in a savory dish.
