Thanksgiving Features Native American Foods

June 112010

Each year, Americans gather with families and friends in the third week of November to celebrate Thanksgiving. The celebration usually includes a meal of turkey, sweet potatoes, squash, cornbread, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. The first Thanksgiving meal in North America is thought to have taken place in sixteen-twenty-one as European settlers gathered with Native Americans to give thanks for a successful fall harvest. Many Americans believe Thanksgiving was created by the early European settlers. But as Jeff Swicord learns at the Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C., Native Americans also played a major role

American Food in Finland

May 302010

We were out buying groceries when we came across an entire section dedicated to American food… and it reminded me of someone I met from the states who said that they were ‘pissed off’ at how expensive mac and cheese is here, when I was thinking, “why the are you buying mac and cheese in Finland?” But it also reminds me of tourists who travel the world but look for the nearest Macdonald’s to get lunch instead of trying the local cuisine… Its just sad. Why travel if you aren’t willing to experience the culture? Its seems as though they could be anywhere in the world, they aren’t taking in what is unique about their destination.

Is American food sold in other countries?

May 202010

What is considered American food? Is it sold in other countries? Like do they have American take-out and American restaurants in China as they have Chinese food places in America?

In Germany, there’s a whole line of frozen dinners called BIG AMERICANS, and there’s a star between the two words. Pic: http://www.justaplanerideaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/big-americans-pizza.jpg

American food can be found all over. KFC is *extremely* popular in Japan and Taiwan – a lot of people in Japan think KFC is a Japanese company, and Colonel Sanders is a folk icon… crazy, huh?

"Soul food" like chicken wings, barbecue, etc. has caught on HUGE in Korea, and to a lesser extent in Japan, too. When I lived in LA, if you walked into a soul food place, odds were it was packed with Korean students, and soul food/Korean BBQ fusion was becoming popular in Koreatown (there was a place called "Seoul Dogg" on Vermont that was always packed).

What are American food, clothing and beliefs that influenced Syria?

May 132010

Hi, im doing a project about Syria, and you need to have 3 pictures indicating traditional syrian food/clothing/beliefs, and on the other side, 3 pictures about what America has influenced Syria through more modern food/clothing/beliefs. Do you know where i can find these pictures?

If you google Syria and then go to pictures you’ll find lots and lots of photographs that show Syrian traditional life and its westernized [American] lifestyle. The first photo you see is a picture of the first lady of Syria dressed very much like Hilary Clinton. ; )

The belief side is more difficult. Syria seems to be careful about keeping religions in check. But, I did find this great photo showing 3 generations of Syrian women in a Syrian Orthodox Church. Go to the first row of photos and click on the fifth photo on the left.
