what would you consider an american food?
ok, we know what chinese, mexican, and italian foods are. what would be american? think hard, you may be supprised where some family meals came from. i was wondering myself.
I’m german and came to this country 15 yrs ago. To me, I consider..hot dogs…burgers…wings…mac n cheese…and brownies….American food.
I think it’s probably fried chicken or fish. Also, plants, like black eyed peas, corn or collard greens – and of course chitlins!

Indigenous foods are American foods. Mexican food can be included in that,as much of it is indigenous(Native) in origin. I consider grits, fish soup, barbecue (yes, this is Native,) tamales, bean bread, etc. American foods. Greens (like collards, wild greens, etc.) are as well, as we’re the ones who taught the settlers to make them.
There’s a particular soup we Cherokee make, ganvtsi (spelled kanuche sometimes) that uses pounded and formed hickory nuts as a base. Add hominy and either sugar or salt (sweet vs. salty is a competition still) and voila!

When we go on cruises and they have American food night, they always serve turkey and dressing. I guess the pilgrims ate it at the first Thanksgiving, and no other countries have Thanksgiving– so I’m thinking that turkey and dressing should be "the" American food.
