1) No, but your family and history being somewhere is a reason to stay. people have links to places–their churches, community, emotions, etc.
2) How you ask? well, if you can barely afford rent in the poor part of town, its unlikely you can afford to pay the higher rent in a safer place. You’d probably say get a job. Well, a) without a degree or training you’re not likely to be well paid, and if you need to work, will you have time for school? and b) not many jobs these days.

For the most part the problems in Philadelphia can be traced directly to government interference in markets. What Michelle Obama is suggesting is taking steps further down that same path. I don’t see how doing the same thing can possibly have different results.

It is government subsidy of the crops and methods of producing all that crap food that lead to childhood obesity becoming such a common malady.
Like innumerable other Federal projects this is another idea to rectify a social problem that was brought on by government interference in markets in the first place.

He can eat whenever he wants, 24/7/365.
His meals are provided at no cost to him.
He lives in a house but he is not required to do any upkeep.
He receives these accommodations absolutely free.
He has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.

@imabeatlelover4 not everyone lives somewhere where its exactly safe to walk around for miles with kids, especially in the hours after work when its dark.
Also, if you use roads, public schools, libraries, if you value the police, firefighters, etc. then you have excepted money from the government. Noone is completely self-sufficient in this country.

I raisied 4 kids, never got a dime from the government and it was difficult. I never asked for anyone else to feed my kids….that was MY job! If other people have kids that’s THEIR job! possible answers: because there family is there. because they can’t afford to live in a better place. In some cases, because when their families first moved to the area they weren’t allowed to live in other places because of redlining. Some probably stay because they want to fix their problems instead of run away from them.

Now, I can’t argue about taxes, because that’s pure difference of opinion. But, personally I don’t see what is so amoral about this. There have been taxes and subsidies for certain business (like farms) for years. It’s bad to spend money we don’t have, BUT I do think you should think twice before reacting so extremely, because this administration is NOT the first to overspend. They’re not that radical..

Is the problem quality, or portion size? People around the world lack access to healthy food… but only America has the 33% obesity rate? If I eat 5 expensive steaks, I’m as unhealthy as someone who eats 5 big macs.
